Well, I would venture a guess that the float was stuck open and flooded the carb, went up the needle jet and into the engine, washed down the cylinder walls past the piston and flodded the crankcase. It's kind of dumb that the bowl vents have a kink in the hose that is taller than the carb opening to the block when on sidestand or upright. It's possible that the float needle is damaged and this occured over time, or that it just got stuck and unstuck itself. Either case, the clutch can suffer damage as well as bearings , etc. with gas in the crankcase. Draining it was a good move, but damage may already be done. Hopefully you caught it before you went too far. IF you start to hear a hard knock be prepared for the engine to sieze and the clutch not to release.... Hope this doesnt make you feel too bad, But on the upside, the petcock on the tank would have to be on pri. for all this to occur. (OR you'd have to have a stuck petcock.)
I'd maybe check the airbox for residual gas that went that way as well. The choke would have no effect on the gas coming out as all the choke lever on the savage does is allow more vacumn to the top of the slide needle piston to raise it out of the bore more. And activate the momentary richness valve to idle it up a bit. The gas can only enter from the float valve, which is supposed to be shut once the bowl is full.
